Dads Need Breaks, Too

By Nama Best

Mike worked full time for various IT companies before deciding to rough it on his own. Foregoing a lavish paycheck and full health insurance benefits, Mike now works for local clients writing custom software. He's respected in his field of work, because he knows computers and programming like the back of his hand, having worked with them from childhood.

In the evenings he attends school to get a degree in computer science (of which he should have an honorary one, since he breezes through all his classes). And yet he always has time for his family. Whether it's homework or just a little cuddle, Mike's arms are always open to the children or me.

He changes diapers right alongside me and even has his own cooking day. He's the one who gets the kids up in the morning, because I'm so tired or had a rough time with the baby (who sleeps in our bed). If I need to go out and just take a break, he watches the kids.

Recently, I realized sometimes I take him for granted and because he's so competent I rely on him too much. Husbands need breaks too, so I'll send him off with his brother to a basketball game and a movie sometime. I know it's not much, but I hope he knows just how much I do appreciate him.
