Oh Yes You Are

By Jessica Anderson

August of '99, my boyfriend and I went on a trip to Hot Springs, Ariz., where his family owns a condo. I packed everything I thought I'd need, except my pills. We were gone for a week. We had so much fun I didn't even notice that I hadn't brought them!

Well, time went by and I just continued taking my pills, like nothing had happened, thinking I couldn't get pregnant. I'd gone without them before and not gotten pregnant, why should this be any different??

One October afternoon my boyfriend and I stopped to get gasoline, and I asked him to get me a pack of grape gum -- I HATE grape ANYTHING, but I didn't think anything of it, figuring I was going to start my period and that was making me wants weird things. He looked at me and said, "Are you pregnant??" I laughed and said no.

Later that day we were getting a bite to eat at Sonic and I decided to eat a loaded hamburger, instead of my usual grilled chicken with honey-mustard and lettuce only. Again, I thought nothing of it. Again, Scott said, "Are you pregnant??" Again I said no.

Well, later that week I noticed I hadn't started my period, but figured since I was so stressed with work that I was a little behind. This was the last straw for Scott. He drove to Wal-Mart, picked up a test, and forced me to take it. I got really mad at him because I WAS NOT pregnant. Or so I thought. After a few minutes I took the stick back to him and said, "See, ONE LINEà" He just shrugged, said he was sorry and went to the living room.

Right then the phone rang and I put the test down to answer it. I walked around the house telling my girlfriend about the silly thing that Scott made me do, and how I proved him wrong, when he walked up to me, had me put my hand out, and handed me the test -- with TWO lines. (Apparently I hadn't waited long enough for the results.)

He smirked and said, "So, Preggers, how do you like the name Christian for a boy??" All I could do was stutter into the phone and hang up. He had been right!! I WAS pregnant!!

We are now married with a beautiful 6-month-old son named Christian.
