Dr. Dad

By Shelley

My husband is sitting on the floor, cutting cardboard into the shape of an airplane. Our two little boys are waiting anxiously by his side.

"Do you think it will fly?" he asks them with a grin on his face.

They can only giggle.

It will fly and they will be amazed. But I am the one who is really amazed.

My husband is a third year medical student. As he sits on the floor this afternoon, I know he should be studying for the biggest test of his life -- "the boards."

Instead, he's playing with his boys, pausing only to kiss his baby daughter. He's an amazing man -- a testimony to "fitting it all in."

He enters the hospitals in three short weeks. His patients will be lucky to know him. And despite the fact that his hours will be crazy and his time at home will decrease, I have no worries. He'll be here when we need him -- like always.

The plane crashes on its first flight. My husband makes some adjustments and tries again.

"That's O.K.," our oldest says with a smile on his face. "Just keep trying Dad."

He will. He always does whatever it takes to keep us all smiling. How did we ever get so lucky?
