Full-Time Grandmother
By Niki Wilson
My name is Niki Wilson, and I am the mother of a 4-year-old boy and 16-month-old girl. My son is a special needs child and is totally dependent on others for his care.
In the beginning when it was becoming apparent that things weren't typical with his development, my husband and I entered into a mode of total chaos. The word "stress" does not even dignify what we were going through. Not only were we dealing with the fact that our precious angel wasn't going to be like all the other children and having to face medical test after medical test, we were facing which one of us was going to leave our careers, whether or not to sell our home since we would be becoming a single-income family, etc.
My mother, the wonderful woman that she is, quit her job to become a full-time grandmother and take care of our son (and now our daughter too). My son doesn't say "mama" but he does have "nana" down to a fine art. I thank God everyday for my mom, and I'm sure my son would too if he could.
