The First Bite

By Melody McDonald

At my grandparents' house, years ago, the family had gathered for some holiday. My aunt walked in with this luscious chocolate pie. Everyone drooled. Everyone tried to sneak a bit when no one was looking. No one would wait until after we ate to have a piece of this pie.

You know how everyone has that one that eats more than he should, always takes the last piece and is basically a little rude and obnoxious? Well, I won't mention any names, but this particular person in our family got up from the dinner table and cut himself this huge chunk of pie. And I mean huge. He took one bite, and I swear his whole face twisted up and distorted. My aunt had forgotten to put the sugar in the pie – the pie made with bittersweet chocolate. We were all disappointed about the pie, but it made our day that Pete was the one who got the first bite!
