Cherished Moments

By Sharon Karraker

When I read the paragraph about your breastfeeding essay my eyes teared up thinking about how special it is to nurse a child. I have a 10- and 12-year-old that I nursed for several months each, and now I am nursing my "Miracle" Baby. Loki is almost 9 months old, with one tooth (ouch) and I cherish every feeding. He is so sweet, he pats me when he is nursing -- it is like a special little I love you with each little pat. We are very lucky to have Loki, a few minutes after he was born I nursed him for a few minutes then he started to have breathing problems (Group B Strep Pnuemonia and Sepsis Shock). They took him back to the nursery and when I went back to see him he stopped breathing and his heart rate dropped all the way down. He had to be revived and put on life support. He ended up having a blood transfusion and fighting for his life for almost a month. After nine horrible heart wrenching days I was finally able to hold him again (only my second time) and YES, I was finally able to breastfeed him. At that very moment was truly the best moment of my life, my baby had survived and I was holding him tight and breastfeeding. Bottle-feeding was not even an option after that cherished moment I spent with him.
