Kind Neighbors Save Liquid Gold in Hurricane
By Jennifer
When my second child Katherine was born, I had an excellent milk supply.
This seemed extremely fortuitous as I would return to work when she was two
weeks old. I happily pumped all my extra milk and stashed it in the deep
freeze. At one count I had saved 60 ounces. I was feeling really relaxed
about having enough to see Katherine through once my supply evened out. My
husband Steve called it our "liquid gold."
Unfortunately, hurricane Floyd hit us here in Wilmington, N.C. when Katherine was 6 weeks old (September 15, 1999). We lost power and had no generator. The next day we fidgeted around trying to decide what to do ... the milk was still frozen but we had no way of knowing how long the power would be off. So we went over to our neighbors and asked if we could run an extension cord off of their generator! My husband was so embarrassed he was hemming and hawing about why we needed the power loan when I just blurted it out ..."My breast milk is going to defrost!"
My neighbors are not the kind of people who talk about these things in public, but they were great! Instead of just running a power cord from their generator they drove their RV over, backed it up the driveway and hooked us up to our own generator. Not only were we able to run our freezer but our refrigerator as well. Two days later, the power was restored and all of the liquid gold remained rock solid in the deep freeze!
